Why? Just why?

2019-12-24

For better or worse, I make new years resolutions every. single. year.

And usually what happens is that I have great plans in january. In february I might even have started some of said plans. And by the time it is march, I've all but forgotten about what I vowed to do in the new year. This year however, I did things different.

You know what would be a great idea? To write down all my resolutions on my chalk board wall!

Best idea ever. Now I have this very optimistic list of everything I wanted to do in 2019, but didn't do. Let's name a few:

  • Spend more time outside
  • Do more creative things
  • Workout more
  • Eat healthier
  • Start a company
  • Fully recover from burn-out
  • Have a healthier self-image
  • Develop more "skills"
  • Get a better work/life balance
  • Be kinder to myself
  • Etc...

Looking back at this list, I can see what I wanted, but these are not really resolutions, are they? It's just a list of things that would make me feel better. And some stuff I would like for the future.

For 2020 I don't just want to write down my resolutions. I want to write down how I plan to get there.

Last year one of my resolutions was to "develop more skills". In my case this was mostly focussed on software engineering. And I've been trying a few different techniques, but nothing really stuck. I felt unmotivated and gave up, without ever feeling like I learned anything. So for this year I want to do it a little differently.

First, I want to work on a specific project. Something that can grow and that I can develop overtime. I also came across a few blog posts about learning in public at the end of the year. These things combined led to the making of this (at this point in time extremely simple) blog. It is supposed to be simple, so that I can use it as a starting point for my skill development in the coming year. I'm excited about working on this project, while sharing my learnings in public in 2020!
